Procedure

A tooth has two main sections, the root and the crown. The root is the section of the tooth that is below the gumline. A dental implant acts as the replacement for the root section of the tooth. It acts as an anchor in the jawbone for the new tooth. The first step of the procedure is surgical placement of the implant. Under regular dental anaesthetic the implant is placed into the jawbone and the gum is then sutured closed over the implant. There may be some discomfort for a few hours afterwards which is controlled by analgesics.

After 3-6 months the next step is to attach an abutment to the implant. This is the part of the implant that will support the final crown.
